Die besondere Tradition der Weihnachtsmärkte

From fragrant gingerbread to mulled wine on the Rhine

Why We Love Christmas Markets So Much

As soon as the days get shorter and the first cold wind sweeps through the streets, there’s that one moment we look forward to every year: the sea of lights comes on, the scent of roasted almonds, cinnamon, and melted chocolate fills the air, and the Christmas market season is officially open! Christmas markets transform squares and streets into sparkling winter wonderlands where crafts, culinary delights, and a festive atmosphere come together. But have you ever wondered where this tradition actually comes from? Why have Christmas markets held such a magical appeal for us for centuries?

Roots in the Middle Ages: Providing for Others Instead of Loafing Around

Originally, the markets in December had very little to do with the festive spirit, string lights, or gift shopping. They were purely for procuring supplies. People had to stock up on meat, wool, and provisions before the harsh winter set in to get through it. It wasn’t until centuries later that these markets evolved into the Christmas markets we know today.

Where It All Began
  • Vienna (1296): One of the oldest documented precursors to today’s Christmas markets originated in Vienna. Duke Albrecht I granted the citizens permission to hold a so-called “December Market,” which served primarily to supply the population.
  • Bautzen (1384): When it comes to Germany, Bautzen takes the lead. With the Wenzelsmarkt, Bautzen was granted a special market charter by King Wenceslaus IV. Today, the market is considered the oldest Christmas market in Germany mentioned in a chronicle.
  • Dresden (1434): The famous Dresden Striezelmarkt was first mentioned in a document in 1434. What began as a one-day meat market before Christmas evolved over the centuries into one of Europe’s most famous Christmas markets.

It wasn’t until the 16th century that these markets, which had originally focused solely on food, began to slowly transform. Artisans such as toy makers, basket weavers, and confectioners sold their wares as Christmas gifts—and the Christmas market, as we know and love it today, was born!

The Magic of Tradition: Nostalgia, Fragrance, and Community

Today, Christmas markets are as much a part of our culture as the Christmas tree is on Christmas Eve. And for good reason:

The scent of childhood: Spices like cloves, cardamom, and clove oil instantly trigger feel-good memories in our brains.
Authentic craftsmanship: Whether hand-poured candles, hand-blown glass ornaments, or handmade chocolate specialties—the stalls bring old crafts back to life.
A sense of community: In an age where so much takes place digitally, the Christmas market offers us genuine, heartwarming encounters in the open air.

Was ist deine liebste Weihnachtsmarkt-Tradition?

I'm Astrid and I've been working in marketing at the Chocolate Museum for more than 10 years. It's one of the nicest places to work in Cologne and there are always great stories to tell about cocoa and chocolate. Where else can you get such a great view of the Rhine right from your desk?
