The Chocolate Museum shines in new splendor

We renovate and modernize for you!

Have you already heard or read? The Chocolate Museum set a new visitor record in 2024, making history in the process. Over 700,000 museum guests visited us in 2024. That's never happened before! This makes us not only the most successful museum in Cologne, but in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia.

To keep it that way, we are constantly modernizing and updating the Chocolate Museum. Read what's new and click through the articles on the individual areas. We have linked them here for you and there are more to come.

The most extensive revision of the exhibition since its opening in 1993 is nearing completion

Back in spring 2020, we opened the glass chocolate factory completely redesigned. Since then, you can walk through a walk-through infographic and see how chocolate is made. In spring 2023, we then opened the exhibition "A journey around the world of cocoa" reopened. There we will take you on an exciting journey around the globe. We start in the tropics and end with your favorite chocolate.

With the exhibition "Chocolate is a feeling"which we opened in August 2024, the Chocolate Museum has gained another highlight. Here you can immerse yourself in the colorful world of chocolate. Whether it's Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Carnival or Valentine's Day, chocolate is always there - yesterday, today and tomorrow?

The final stage of our exhibition renovation is the revision of the cultural history of chocolate.

Since September 2024, construction work on the new "Time travel of cocoa" exhibition has been running in parallel with the museum's ongoing operations, which is logistically not so easy. We will open the exhibition on June 24, 2025, so look forward to it. Over 5000 years of the cultural history of chocolate, interactive, with exciting exhibits from many countries around the world.

You will experience a fascinating journey through the history of cocoa and chocolate - from the first traces of cocoa use in Central America to the European aristocratic culture of the Baroque era, when chocolate was still a luxury drink. Our new exhibition also introduces you to important pioneers of industrialization and sheds light on the darker side of the colonial erasome of which still have an impact today.

We were delighted with the record last year and look forward to continuing to write our chocolate story with you.

I'm Astrid and I've been working in marketing at the Chocolate Museum for more than 10 years. It's one of the nicest places to work in Cologne and there are always great stories to tell about cocoa and chocolate. Where else can you get such a great view of the Rhine right from your desk?
