Trude Herr: More than just a "no" to chocolate
Trude Herr, the unforgettable pop singer from Cologne, is certainly known to many for her catchy tune "Ich will keine Schokolade". But there is a deeper meaning behind the humorous lyrics.
In her song, Herr sings about a young woman who longs for a serious relationship and thus rejects the sweet seduction of chocolate. The supposed aversion to chocolate here symbolizes the desire for something more mature, for a love that is more than just a superficial pleasure.
This ambiguous interpretation has contributed to the song's popularity over the decades. Trude Herr was not only a talented singer, but also a committed Cologne resident. She was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1988 for her many and varied activities.
In addition to her musical career, she was also committed to her hometown of Cologne. She did a lot of good, as did the founder of the Chocolate Museum Hans Imhoff with his foundation. In 1977, she opened a popular theater in Cologne's Severinsviertel district, also known as Vringsveedel or Stollwerckviertel. The latter owes its name to the former Stollwerck chocolate factory, whose history is presented in detail in the Cologne Chocolate Museum.
One can imagine that Trude Herr might have reconsidered her opinion of chocolate after a visit to the Chocolate Museum. After all, the diverse world of cocoa and chocolate offers far more than just sweet temptation.
