Chocolate Stories - The Podcast
Chocolate Stories the podcast
In cooperation, the Cologne Chocolate Museum and Engagement Global have created the podcast series "Chocolate Stories" for chocolate professionals and those who want to become one.
When was chocolate paid for? How can you recognize fair chocolate? What can companies do to prevent exploitative and climate-damaging trade? From Wednesday, October 6, 2021, all listeners to "Chocolate Stories" will get answers to these questions and a look behind the scenes. With the podcast, the Chocolate Museum Cologne and Engagement Global invite chocolate fans to learn more about their favorite sweet treat and also pick up information on fair trade and tips for sustainability.
In six episodes, presenter Marika Liebsch talks to people who not only like chocolate, but also live with it. On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, Eileen Schwarz from the Cologne Chocolate Museum and Hannah Radke from Fairtrade Germany will start with an overview of certificates and seals and give valuable tips for the fair and sustainable consumption of chocolate. A week later, Thomas Schiffer from the Cologne Chocolate Museum and Serge Palasie from Eine Welt Netz NRW e.V. take a look at the cocoa bean's eventful past, in which it was a means of payment, status symbol and commodity. In the next episode, Marika Liebsch discusses corporate responsibility. Jelena Radeljić from Ludwig Weinrich and Barbara Schimmelpfennig from Gepa (Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Partnerschaft mit der Dritten Welt mbH) provide information on the Supply Chain Act and the ways in which companies can contribute to greater fairness in trade.
Other topics that presenter Marika Liebsch will discuss with experts include the living conditions of cocoa farmers, as well as the influence that every consumer has on greater fairness and the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The podcasts
More and more young people are actively campaigning for greater sustainability. In this episode, we gain exciting insights into this commitment. Marika Liebsch meets Eva Schiffer (ambassador for climate justice from PLANT FOR THE PLANET) and Laura Berndsen (FairActivists from Fairtrade Germany) for an interview at the Cologne Chocolate Museum.
Cocoa is a highly competitive commodity on the world market. Low purchase prices are changing the lives and threatening the livelihoods of millions of cocoa farmers. Marika Liebsch talks to guests Friedel Hütz-Adams (researcher at the Südwind Institute for Economy and Ecumenism) and Henriette Walz (advisor at GIZ's Green Innovation Center Côte d'Ivoire).
Consuming sustainable, fair-trade chocolate is one way of contributing to achieving the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. What opportunities do we have to get involved in making our world more climate-friendly, ecological and fair? Marika Liebsch talks to guests Sophia Bachmann (UN Youth Delegate for Sustainable Development) and Tim Walter (member of the One World Network NRW).

Cooperation with Engagement Global
The podcast was developed as part of Engagement Global 's Development Education in Germany (EBD) program in cooperation with the Cologne Chocolate Museum. The aim of the EBD program is to motivate people to take a critical look at global developments through information and educational measures and to encourage them to get involved in development policy. Engagement Global's field offices run the program on a decentralized basis in order to establish a lasting regional and local commitment to development policy.
