It has been unusually quiet on the forecourt of the Chocolate Museum since mid-March. In normal times, gourmet markets and open-air culture take place on the tip of the Rheinauhafen. Not so in the Corona summer of 2020. All events have been canceled until the fall.
Now a replacement has been found that easily meets all safety and hygiene requirements and is also a tourist asset for Cologne.
A top-class Ferris wheel will enliven the city center from Fronleichnam, June 11, 2020,. It is one of the highest mobile Ferris wheels in Europe. The 42 gondolas can accommodate up to 6 people each. During the ride, guests not only get a wonderful view of Cologne Cathedral and the entire Rhine panorama, in good weather even the Siebengebirge can be seen in the south.
Willi Kipp, operator of the Ferris wheel, turned to Stadtmarketing Köln in search of a summer location. Managing Director Anett Polster knew of the orphaned site at the Chocolate Museum and made the connection.
After a thorough examination of the feasibility, the preparation of a soil survey and the good cooperation with the administration of the city of Cologne, it was quickly clear that the Ferris wheel could be erected.
“We are pleased that with the Ferris wheel we were able to create an offer at the Chocolate Museum that provides safe fun for the many passers-by in the Rheinauhafen. In keeping with our summer slogan this year: It’s time for the beautiful things again,” says Annette Imhoff, Managing Director of the Chocolate Museum.
